Is deleting files or formatting a drive enough?

Usually not for controlled disposition. Ordinary deletion may leave recoverable data. The method should be selected for media type, sensitivity and reuse intent, using approved clear, purge or physical destruction procedures and verification.

What does chain of custody record?

A chain-of-custody record links identified assets to collection, handoffs, transport, receipt, processing outcome and exceptions. Required detail, signatures, sealing and evidence depend on the organization’s policy and risk.

Can equipment be reused instead of destroyed?

Yes, when condition, ownership, software licensing, security policy and sanitization results allow it. Reuse or value recovery is evaluated before material recycling; only the data-bearing media or assets requiring destruction follow that route.
