Moving a data center: a plan for less surprise and downtime
Inventory, dependencies, power, connectivity and a rehearsed return path turn physical relocation into a controlled project.
A data center move concentrates risks that are usually separate: power, network, hardware, applications, vendors and the business window. Execution begins long before the first device is powered down.
Build an inventory that explains dependencies
Beyond model and serial number, record rack position, load, connections, addresses, owners and dependent services. Photos of rack backs and labels at both ends reduce ambiguity during reinstallation.
Plan in waves
- validate space, electrical load, cooling and ports;
- preinstall racks, power and cabling;
- define shutdown and startup order;
- protect and track every asset in transit;
- test infrastructure, application and user journey;
- keep explicit rollback criteria.
Rollback must be real
A return plan without reserved time, people and infrastructure is only an intention. Decide the point of no return and who can stop the move. Finally, update diagrams and inventory: documentation is part of delivery, not a later task.
